Valeriana officinalis

Valerian (root) has long been used to promote a deep and restful sleep in those with occasional sleeplessness. By promoting a sense of calm and relaxation, it supports the body in falling asleep naturally. Widely known as a sedative for the nervous system and carminative for digestion, Valerian is useful for insomnia, anxiety, nervousness, nervous stomach, headaches due to stress as well as menstrual cramps. Studies have found that valerian can produce a sleep similar to that of conventional sleep aids, but without the morning grogginess or side effects. This plant is native to Europe but was readily cultivated in North America in the early 19th century.
