Lemon Balm

Melissa officinalis

Lemon balm (leaf and flower) has traditionally been used as a mild sedative and as a mood elevator. It is also well known as a digestive aid to relieve gas and bloating. This mild, flavorful remedy is gentle enough for children, and is commonly used to relieve restlessness, insomnia, teething, fevers, colds/flus and colic. It may be useful for seasonal affective disorder combined with St. John's wort as well as for anxiety. It has antiviral activity against the herpes virus and is useful for hyperthyroidism, but not recommended for those with hypothyroidism. Lemon balm is a member of the mint family and is native to Southern Europe.
