Goldenseal

Hydrastis canadensis

Goldenseal (root) is a powerful antibacterial, antiparasitic, antiviral and antifungal agent. It is considered "the king of the mucous membranes" as it helps to promote healthy mucous membrane tissue. It is rich in berberine compounds which give Goldenseal it's strong antibacterial effect. It is useful for infections from the respiratory system to the digestive and urinary systems. It is indicated for sinusitis and post nasal drip as well as conjunctivitis and skin infections. Because it is bitter, Goldenseal can also stimulate digestion and absorption, while stimulating liver and gall bladder function. It is useful in cases of diarrhea and has a long history of use for fighting the common cold and flu. It is meant to be used for short periods of time, due to its powerful antibacterial nature. This herb is native to parts of the Unites States and Canada.
