Black Cohosh

Actae racemosa

Black Cohosh (root) was traditionally used by Native Americans as a women's remedy. The herb functions as an antispasmodic and emmenagogue, indicated for ovarian and uterine pain, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, and chronic dull pain. Black Cohosh can also be useful for arthritic pain in the joints. Modern research demonstrates its use for reducing hot flashes and depression in menopausal women by reducing lutenizing hormone secretion and equalizing circulation. It is a member of the buttercup family and is native to North America.
