Astragalus (root) or Huang Qi is considered to be a superior tonic remedy in Chinese medicine. This deep immune tonic works to rebuild depleted immune and endocrine systems, especially in light of stress and environmental challenges, which also makes it a mild adaptogen. It is native to China and it contains immune-stimulating polysaccharides, glucoronic acid, astragalosides, flavones and isoflavones. In Chinese medicine it is considered to enhance wei qi, protecting us from illness and preventing colds, influenza, bronchitis and other infections. It has anti-aging capabilities by slowing down the telomere shortening rate, reducing DNA damage and improving DNA repair. Astragalus is native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere.
